FAQ

.

What is the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist?

There is no real difference. As of 1993, Chiropody changed its name to Podiatry, as it is the internationally recognised name for a foot specialist, and also more appropriate as podiatry encompasses a more modern approach to the profession, looking at pharmacology, biomechanics, orthotics, cortisone injections, nail surgery and foot surgery.

The profession, like its name, is constantly changing due to the extensive training given to students and the continuing education that enables podiatrists to treat a wide array of foot, lower limb and kinetic chain problems. As well as continuing to treat the more routine corns, callus, and nail care.

Why choose a HCPC registered Podiatrist/ Chiropodist?

Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) regulate the standards of proficiency are the standards which every chiropodist and podiatrist must meet in order to become registered.

Once registered, chiropodists and podiatrists must continue to meet the standards of proficiency that are relevant to their scope of practice - the areas of their profession in which they have the knowledge and skills to practise safely and effectively.

Anyone who calls themselves a podiatrist or chiropodist must register with the HCPC. Go to their website to check if your podiatrist or chiropodist is registered (click HCPC image on the right).
